Cough Q & A

What causes a cough?

Coughs are commonly believed to be exclusively linked to a cold, the flu, or a sore throat. But it’s important to remember that many other conditions can generate a cough as well.

Some of these conditions include:

  • Allergies: dry cough, sneezing, and runny nose
  • Lower respiratory infections: pneumonia, lung clots, or bronchitis
  • Lung collapse: smoking or trauma-related
  • Heart problems: fluid in the lungs and shortness of breath

If you’ve noticed your cough doesn’t go away or that when it does, it comes back a couple of weeks later, then you might be suffering from a chronic cough. This is often a sign of asthma, tuberculosis, lung cancer, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

When should you seek medical attention for a cough?

While an acute cough can come and go fairly quickly, it’s essential you pay attention to the nature of your cough. Is it deep? Phlegmy? If the cough persists, get in touch with ERgent Med immediately.

Dr. Hamm also recommends you get in touch with him if your cough has led to any of the following:

  • Coughing up blood
  • Dry to wet cough changes
  • Lingering cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sleep issues
  • Fever

The faster you can address your cough, the better you’ll be able to determine what caused it.

How do you treat a cough?

Seeing as a cough can come from a wide range of factors, Dr. Hamm recommends treatment only after his initial assessment of its cause.

If your cough is simple and not linked to a more significant condition, he might suggest some over-the-counter medications to make it stop.

However, if the cough is related to a medical condition, Dr. Hamm might prescribe medication to address inflammation, viruses, bacterial issues, or infection.

He might also suggest some lifestyle changes that can encourage the long-lasting health of your lungs, such as quitting smoking or using an air filter in your home.

With proper treatment, Dr. Hamm ensures you find relief from chronic coughing, return to your regular sleeping schedule, and boost your immune system’s health.
